International Society on Thrombosis and Hameostasis Selects Stanton Communications as Agency of Record for World Thrombosis Day

Association Joins Firm’s Roster of Sector-Leading Clients

Washington, D.C. (April 14, 2020) – The International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH)  selected Stanton Communications to help manage a global media relations program in support of the Society’s seventh annual World Thrombosis Day(WTD) campaign. A year-long campaign that culminates each year on October 13, WTD shines a spotlight on the burden of thrombosis, also known as blood clots, and the startling fact that one in four people worldwide die from conditions related to thrombosis.

Stanton Communications will provide media relations and strategic communications support in an effort to amplify global awareness of blood clots including the causes, risk factors, signs/symptoms and evidence-based prevention and treatment. With more than 900,000 people in the United States alone affected by blood clots each year, about 100,000 of those people will die, which is greater than the total number of people who lose their lives each year to AIDS, breast cancer, and motor vehicle crashes combined.

“Such statistics are staggering,” said Peter Stanton, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Stanton Communications. “Equally alarming are the findings of an ISTH Ipsos-Reid survey that suggest only half of those polled were aware of the term ‘pulmonary embolism’ and a scant 44 percent knew the term ‘deep vein thrombosis.’  Meanwhile, the survey found 88 percent awareness of heart attack and 85 percent awareness of stroke. With respect to thrombosis, clearly, there is an important job to be done,” Stanton concluded.

To support the campaign in markets around the world, Stanton will engage partner agencies that are members of the firm’s two networks, PR World Alliance (https://prworldalliance.com) and The Network One (https://thenetworkone.com/). Together, the agencies will undertake additional education for healthcare professionals and public policy activities around patient safety, health literacy and universal health coverage.

“The WTD campaign is anchored firmly on the global health stage and continues to build momentum to draw attention across a broad swath of key audiences,” said Beverley Hunt, O.B.E., WTD Steering Committee Chair. “With a strong foundation in science, we look forward to working with Stanton Communications to create a groundswell of learning, ultimately saving lives in the process.”

About World Thrombosis Day (WTD)

Launched in 2014 by the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis and held annually on 13 October, World Thrombosis Day (WTD) aims to increase public, healthcare professional and health care systems’ awareness of thrombosis and, ultimately, to reduce deaths and disabilities from thromboembolic disease through a greater awareness of its causes, risk factors, signs and symptoms, and evidence-based prevention and treatment. WTD’s mission supports the World Health Assembly’s global target of reducing premature deaths by non-communicable disease by 25 percent by 2025, as well as the World Health Organization’s Thirteenth General Programme of Work 2019–2023, the Montevideo Roadmap 2018-2030 on NCDs and the Political Declaration of UNGA’ Third High-level Meeting on NCDs.
